Why Do You Tan?
Most people tan for cosmetic purposes. A beautiful, dark tan makes a person appear slimmer, more fit and active, helps hide flaws of the skin, and creates a glowing, younger looking appearance.
But more and more people are tanning not just to look better, but to feel better as well.
Ever notice how you feel energized and happier after a tanning session. Well it's not just in your head. Studies have shown that tanning actually increases the production of serotonin, the bodies happy hormone! Regular UV exposure can stave off moderate depression, particularly if combined with exercise.
And the benefits of tanning don't stop with just your mood. When exposed to UV light, the body produces Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential to your health (and studies show that UV exposure is the best way to get your daily dose of Vitamin D). According to decades of research, controlled exposure to UV light can have powerful health benefits into the many roles played by vitamin D in the body. According to Dr. Michael F. Holick, professor of Dermatology, Medicine, Physiology and Biophysics at Boston University Medical Center, exposure to sunshine or artificially produced UV light produced by indoor tanning beds can help ward off a host of debilitating and sometimes deadly diseases, including osteoporosis, hypertension, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, depression and even cancers such as colon, prostate, ovarian and breast. According to his studies, exposing people with high blood pressure to UVB rays in a tanning salon lowers their blood pressure readings as much as prescribed blood pressure medications. He also found that increasing vitamin D improved the heart’s pumping ability and reduced cardiac strain.
So now you have even more reasons to tan (beauty, mood and your health). But remember to always tan in moderation and never, ever burn. Over-exposure to UV light (burning) can cause premature aging and even increase your risk of skin cancer. Tan in moderation and start out slow (our consultants can assist you with this), in order to receive the many benefits of tanning, without the risk.
Tanning Tips

Tanning Lotions: Tanning lotions are an essential part of the tanning process, and make the most of your tanning sessions. Applying a professional tanning lotion before your tanning session will allow you to tan up to 65% faster! They also help to keep your skin moisturized, help prevent burning, and give you a more radiant, and longer lasting tan. Elite Tanning Spas have a HUGE variety of lotions in stock, and our consultants can help find the perfect one for YOU!
Tingle Lotions: Some tanning lotions contain Tingle (sometimes called Sizzle or Heat). Basically what these lotions do is increase your skin's micro-circulation which, in turn, increases your skins ability to tan.
Not Convinced? - Think of the "pressure points" (the white spots you get on your tail bone and shoulder blades) after tanning in tanning beds. Those points of untanned skin are due to decreased circulation. Still not convinced? Think about how you tan faster outdoors when you're moving (exercising, playing sports) than when you're just relaxing in the sun. Exercise stimulates your skin's microcirculation, which improves your tanning results. Many of the tanning products we carry work the same way! By increasing your skins microcirculation with one of our vitamin enriched formulas, you are assured of the best tanning results - not to mention helping skin cells regenerate and oxidize faster for a longer lasting, more youthful-looking tan. The redness and tingling will fade within a short amount of time, but your skin will radiate a beautiful tan glow as the day progresses.
After-Tan Products: Experts widely believe that your melanocytes are actively tanning up to 48 hours after your last tanning session. After Tan Products are designed to be used as often as desired but especially after tanning, after showering, and before bed to help your skin receive the maximum Moisturization and Skin Conditioning ingredients within your 48-hour continuous tanning period.
